THE FIGHT WAS OVER IN MINUTES. Zoe was furious when she dropped the dome and surveyed the carnage.

“How did we miss capturing someone to torture for information a second time?” she demanded.

From his spot behind the bushes where Sami wouldn’t have to see him naked, Aric shrugged. “I don’t think anybody was keeping track of who got the last one,” he said. “I’m sorry. It all happened really fast.”

“And you were enjoying the killing,” Zoe muttered as she moved to one of the bodies. Only three remained intact. She had burned the rest to ash. “Does anybody recognize this guy?”

“Not from here,” Aric replied. “If I could go over there to look then I might be able to answer that question for you.”

“Don’t even think about it.” Sami was shrill. “If I see you naked I’ll die of embarrassment.”

“So will I,” Zoe said, her eyes snapping to the east at the sound of footsteps.

“It’s Booker,” I reassured her at the same moment the cupid appeared out of the darkness. He had two pairs of jogging pants draped over his arm. “Thanks for coming.”

“I considered letting them suffer but I didn’t want the kids traumatized by seeing their sheriff naked,” Booker said as he regarded the two men behind the bush. “You guys didn’t think this thing through, did you?”

Galen scowled at Booker. “Just give us the pants.”

“Fine.” Booker threw the jogging pants at them. “That’s the only thing I had that I knew would fit. No need to return them.”

Booker turned his attention to Sami, who looked torn as she glanced between him and the viewing window. “You look none the worse for wear, little mage.”

She smiled at him. “You smell like gummy alligators. That’s so weird.”

“Gummy alligators?” Booker laughed so loud it echoed throughout the darkness. “That’s a new one.”

“Yes, well, I’m a girl of varied tastes.”

Booker surveyed the dead wolves. “What happened here?”

“I have no idea,” Galen replied as he stepped out from behind the bush. The sweatpants were a size too small but they were better than nothing. “But I plan to find out, I promise you that.”
